Animal Control

The City of Odenville is dedicated to maintaining a safe and humane environment for both residents and animals. We observe the St. Clair County, Alabama Animal Control ordinances and work to address issues related to stray, nuisance, and dangerous animals, while also promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare as follows:

  • Leash Laws: All dogs must be on a leash or in a fenced area when outside their owner’s property. Free-roaming pets may be impounded.(2006 Alabama Code – Section 3-1-5 Permitting dogs to run at large)
  • Vaccinations: All pet owners should ensure their pets have up-to-date rabies vaccinations.
  • Stray & Nuisance Animals: Owners are responsible for keeping their pets from becoming a nuisance to neighbors. Repeated violations may result in fines.
  • Dangerous Animals: Any pet displaying aggressive behavior toward people or other animals may be subject to additional containment rules or removal.
  • Animal Neglect & Cruelty: It is illegal to abandon, mistreat, or fail to provide proper food, water, and shelter for pets. Violations will be investigated by Animal Control and law enforcement.

What to Do If You Encounter a Stray or Nuisance Animal

Stray Dogs & Cats

If you find a stray pet:

  • Check for an ID tag and attempt to contact the owner.
  • If no identification is found, report the animal to Animal Control to check for a microchip.
  • Avoid handling aggressive or scared animals—call for professional assistance.

Nuisance or Dangerous Animals

If an animal is causing disturbances, damaging property, or displaying aggressive behavior:

  • For domesticated animals (dogs, cats, livestock), contact Animal Control.
  • For wild animals (raccoons, coyotes, etc.), contact the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources - 334.242.3486
  • Do not feed stray or wild animals, as this encourages them to stay in the area.
    Injured or Sick Animals
  • Do not attempt to handle injured or sick strays—contact Animal Control.
  • If an animal appears rabid (acting aggressively, foaming at the mouth), report it immediately.
